Autoglym Instant Tyre Dressing

Instant Tyre Dressing is one of two tyre dressings from the good people at Autoglym. It’s a tyre dressing that’s been in my arsenal for nearly 6 years now, which should give an indication of just how good it is.

Instant Tyre Dressing Application

With Instant Tyre Dressing, you have the option of being able to apply this to a wet tyre, or a dry one. My personal preference is to apply it to a dry sidewall.

There are also two methods in which the dressing can be applied. The first is to spray it directly onto the sidewall of the tyre. I’ve tried this quite a few times and I’m not really a fan of it. Even though the sidewall should only be misted lightly with it, it’s still the case that some of it will run down the sidewall and onto the alloy wheel itself. This is the last thing you want after cleaning the wheels off.

The second method of application (and my preferred method) is to apply a small amount of the dressing to applicator pad and then apply it to the sidewall of the tyre. By doing this, it will allow you to cover the whole surface evenly. It should be noted that at no point should the tread be dressed. In addition to this, this dressing must not be applied to motorbike tyres as well.

With respect to the application pad, there’s a couple of options. You could invest in those cheap, circular yellow foam pads to apply the dressing to the tyres. Whilst I would never dream of using these on the paint work, they’re very useful for dressing tyres. Likewise, since Instant Tyre Dressing can also be applied to wheel arches to quickly spruce up their appearance, the cheap pads are great for applying to arches.

The other pad of choice is to use the Autoglym Perfect Polish Applicator. This is a hard wearing foam applicator pad of a considerable size. It comes in a pack of two meaning that you could use the other pad to apply Car Glass Polish. It’s definitely the case that you would want to keep the two pads apart from each other. The benefit of using the Perfect Polish Applicator when applying Instant Tyre Dressing is that thanks to the straight lines, it makes it the perfect way to get into the rim of the tyre.

I prefer a satin finish when I’m dressing tyres. A very small amount of product is needed on the applicator pad in order to get a natural, OEM look. If you would prefer a shiny, wet look, then several heavy applications of Instant Tyre Dressing should be used.

Instant Tyre Dressing Durability

The durability is something which has continued to impress me year on year. I can usually get three weeks per application, with a bottle lasting me upwards of eight months. This really is nothing short of exceptional for a product at such a low price point.

The week after applying it, I used Custom Wheel Cleaner to clean the alloys, and some of this also ran onto the tyres. The Custom Wheel Cleaner did not have an impact on the appearance of the dressing at all. The water was still beading off the tyres, indicating that the side wall was still protected from the elements and it looked great.

One thing to consider though is that preparation of the side wall will have an impact on the durability of the dressing. Custom Wheel Cleaner is a great way to clean the tyres before applying the dressing.

Similarly, the amount of miles that you drive on a weekly basis will also have a real impact on the durability of the dressing, as well as the conditions that it’s driven in, such as heavy snow.

For those that want an even longer dressing, it would be advisable instead to go use Autoglym High Performance Tyre Gel instead.
