In this review, I’ll be looking at Polar Seal from Autoglym. This is the final stage of the Polar range and is the protection aspect of it. It is designed to be exclusively used in a snow foam lance and pressure washer.
I have tested this on various cars over the space of the last 8 months to assess how well it performs.
How To Use Polar Seal
Before using Polar Seal, the car should be cleaned with a high quality shampoo. Ideally you would do this with Polar Wash, but any other quality one will do. Instead of drying the car, it should remain wet. This is to prevent the Polar Seal from drying prematurely on the paintwork.
It should be applied in the shade, or when the car is cool to the touch.
In order to use it, you need to use a maximum of 40ml of Polar Seal and add 200ml of water to it. This mixture should be enough to cover a large sized car. This can then be applied to it the same way that you would apply a snow foam to it. A slow, sweeping motion will be sufficient enough to ensure full coverage of the car.
When applying Polar Seal, I like to apply it to the roof and bonnet and down one side of the car. After this, I rinse it off using my pressure washer. It should not be allowed to dwell on the paintwork for long periods of time. After this, I like to then do the boot lid, and the other side of the car and rinsed off.
If this is applied in warmer weather, then I will only apply it to the roof and then rinse off and follow this procedure for the other panels on the car.
The rinse off should be thoroughly carried out. This will ensure that there is no residue left behind. In addition to this, regardless of the time of the year that Polar Seal is applied, the car should be dried fully after rinsing it off. This helps to smooth out any left over residue on the paint work, and prevents water spotting.
One area that really should be avoided is the windscreen. The reason for this is that it can result in wiper blade judder and smearing which can be dangerous in heavy rain. If you do get it onto the glass, a high quality glass cleaner such as Fast Glass should be used as soon as possible to remove Polar Seal from it.
After use, I like to rinse out my snow foam lance several times with water to ensure that the Polar Seal has been fully rinsed out and won’t gum up the lance.
Results
I was genuinely blown away with the results of Polar Seal. These can be seen right away when it’s being rinsed off. The Polar Seal is extremely hydrophobic and water flies off of the car when rinsing it.
It really helps to keep the car clean. The benefit of this is that subsequent washes are a lot easier to carry out. It also makes drying the car a lot easier as well. The drying towel just glides over the paintwork.
In terms of the appearance, it makes the car look extremely glossy. Don’t get me wrong, I love how the car looks when a high quality wax is applied to it. However, this does take time to carry out. In contrast, I can fully apply Polar Seal to the car and have it dried off in less than ten minutes. In the winter months especially, this is a real game changer as it allows you to quickly protect your car from the elements, and make it look great in the process.
With respect to longevity, I’ve been able to get 6-8 weeks out of each application. This is very respectable to a spray on, rinse off product. This would also make sense why Autoglym suggest that it is not applied any sooner than 4 weeks after the previous application. It should be noted that layering the product is not recommended as it needs to bond to the paintwork, and layering it has no real benefit to it’s performance.
Value For Money
At the time of writing, you can get a bottle of Polar Seal for just under £20. This is for a 1 litre bottle. On the basis that one application uses 40ml of product, you’ll get 25 applications from a single bottle. Now, working on the assumption that each application will last 6 weeks, you’ll be able to get over 2 years out of a bottle.
This is excellent value for money, especially when you factor in how easy it is to use and also how well it performs. This is one of the most competitively priced spray on protective products on the market.
