Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection is one of the older products in the Autoglym range, but don’t let it’s age fool you in terms of it’s effectiveness. At the heart of it, it’s a  paint sealant that has great results. With that in mind, let’s get the ball rolling on the review

How To Use Extra Gloss Protection

When it comes to any paint sealant, it’s important that the paintwork is as clean as possible. It’s important that the paint is fully decontaminated. Usually for a sealant, it is applied directly to the paintwork. This can be done with Extra Gloss Protection as well. However, if you want an even better finish (both in terms of longevity and also appearance), then my recommendation is to apply a layer of Super Resin Polish first, and then add the Extra Gloss Protection on afterwards.

In terms of application, this can be applied by using a soft microfibre cloth with a short pile on it. One thing to note is that when applying it to a cloth, a little goes a long way. You really don’t need much at all to help spread it across the panel.

When I’m applying it to the bonnet, I split it up into two sections. A few drops from the bottle onto the cloth is more than enough to cover half of it. For those that would prefer a bit more control, I would recommend using the Glart applicator pads. The product doesn’t absorb fully into the pad, meaning it can be applied with ease to the surface.

One thing to note though is that since this is a sealant, no pressure needs to be applied when applying it. The pad will glide along the paintwork making the application a real breeze. Generally speaking, the curing time is between 30 minutes to 1 hour.

This does depend on how hot it is, but I’ve left it for 30 minutes before removing it an the results are impressive. The way I look at it is that by the time the entire car is coated, it is then time to go back to the start to buff it off. Also, it’s important to note that you cannot use a Perfect Polish Applicator with Extra Gloss Protection.

In terms of the buff off, I’ve always used the Autoglym Hi-Tec finishing cloth. It’s the one that’s recommended for the removal process, and it’s the same cloth that comes with UHD Wax. The buff off is really easy. What I like about Extra Gloss Protection is that unlike some spray products that need to be removed right away or they’re hard to remove, this isn’t the case with this. Likewise, if you leave it on for a bit too long, it’s not like a wax that really cakes up the microfibre cloth on removal. As long as you use a thin, even coat then you’ll get great results.

If you want to add a second layer, then I would recommend that you wait 24 hours, give the car a quick clean with a high quality shampoo (such as UHD Shampoo) and then apply the second coat. There’s no benefit to applying another layer of SRP on top of the EGP and then another coat of EGP.

Durability

When I’ve used the combination of Super Resin Polish and Extra Gloss Protection, I’ve had just over 4 months from it. If I add on a second coat of Extra Gloss Protection then it’s nearer to the 6 month mark.

There’s the argument that you could layer Rapid Ceramic Spray and you’ll get just about the same amount of durability. There’s also the argument of going straight for UHD Wax. These are valid points. However, for a lot of people (myself included), they’re blown away with the durability and the gloss levels when using SRP and EGP. For two really easy to apply products regardless of the weather, it’s a great way to get the car some long standing protection to the car.

One area that I’m really curious to try again is the combination of SRP and EGP on alloy wheels as well. It’ll be interesting to see if this combo can add a reasonable length of protection to the alloys.

Value for Money

Another reason for using EGP instead of Rapid Ceramic Spray or UHD Wax is the price. EGP is cheaper than both of these products. Whilst it’s not a massive difference between EGP and Rapid Ceramic Spray, the difference in price could go towards other detailing products.

Considering how long a bottle lasts for as well, it’s really something that should be considered as part of any paint sealant regimen.
